Best Gyms in Chicago (2026): 7 Verified Picks by Price, Pools and Neighborhood

7 Chicago gyms compared: Mode Gym, Chicago Fitness Center, Chicago Athletic Clubs, The Garage, East Bank Club, Midtown and Lakeshore, with published prices, hours and day passes checked October 2026.

The best gym in Chicago depends on how much club you want and which neighborhood you'll actually get to. For the best-value full gym with classes, Mode Gym in the West Loop is $80 to $125 a month with no enrollment fee. For the cheapest verified membership, Chicago Fitness Center in Lakeview sells six months for $294 with classes included. For a seven-club network with pools, Chicago Athletic Clubs runs a $0 enrollment promotion but doesn't publish dues online. For coached strength classes, The Garage Chicago in West Town and Lincoln Park is the pick. At the top end, East Bank Club publishes $295 a month plus a $750 initiation fee, while Midtown Athletic Club in Bucktown and Lakeshore Sport & Fitness in Lincoln Park keep their prices on request.

How this list was made: The Fitness Falcon did not visit, tour or train at any of these gyms. This is a research-based guide, rewritten in October 2026 to replace an earlier version of this page. Every gym was checked on its official website and at least one independent source on 18 October 2026. No gym paid to be included. Prices are exactly as each gym publishes them, and where a gym doesn't publish a price we say so. We don't quote star ratings or review counts. If you're weighing a national chain, our guide to US gym chain membership prices and fees compares the big names side by side.

What gym memberships cost in Chicago

Among the gyms we could verify, published monthly prices run from $49 (Chicago Fitness Center's six-month deal) to $295 (East Bank Club). Four of the seven gyms don't publish dues online. The headline number is only part of the cost:

  • Initiation fees. East Bank Club charges $600 to $1,000. Mode and Chicago Fitness Center charge $0. Chicago Athletic Clubs waives enrollment during its current promotion.
  • Commitment. Mode's $80 and $89.95 rates need a 12-month contract; its no-contract rate is $125. Chicago Fitness Center's deal is six months paid up front.
  • Cancellation terms. The Garage asks for 14 days' notice and offers no freezes. Others don't publish their terms, so get them in writing.
  • Day passes. Mode's $40 guest pass (free for first-time locals) is the only official day rate on this list. Chicago Athletic Clubs' $30 pass is reported, not published.

Planet Fitness, LA Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Fitness Formula Clubs and XSport all have Chicago clubs, but none could be verified from an official page our checks could read. Our US gym chain price comparison covers the national chains' published rates and annual fees.

How to choose a gym in Chicago

  1. Start with your schedule. None of these gyms is open 24/7. Lakeshore Lincoln Park opens earliest at 4:30am, and East Bank, Midtown and Mode run to 11pm on weekdays. Class gyms like The Garage only work if the schedule fits your day.
  2. Pick a side of the city. The picks cover the West Loop (Mode, Chicago Athletic Clubs), West Town (The Garage), River North (East Bank), Bucktown (Midtown), Lincoln Park (Lakeshore, The Garage) and Lakeview (Chicago Fitness Center). In winter, the gym on your commute wins. That's general advice, not a measured finding.
  3. Check parking. Mode includes validated parking. The Garage lists free street parking at both locations. Chicago Athletic Clubs West Loop has an adjacent lot. Chicago Fitness Center has metered spots and a rear lot.
  4. Price the whole first year. Add initiation and any annual fee to 12 months of dues. East Bank Club's individual first year is $4,290 before extras; Mode's is $960 on the prepaid annual plan.
  5. Use the trial at the hour you'd train. Mode's free first visit for locals, The Garage's two-week intro and Chicago Athletic Clubs' free pass all let you see how busy the floor is. If you've been away a while, our guide to returning to the gym after a long break has a sensible first-month plan.
  6. Read the cancellation terms. Illinois law adds protections, below, but your contract's notice period still applies.

Illinois gym contract basics

Illinois regulates gym contracts under the Physical Fitness Services Act (815 ILCS 645). Section 6 gives members these rights:

  • Three-business-day cancellation. You can cancel within three business days after the first business day after you sign, for a full refund. A business day is any day the facility is open.
  • Seven days for unopened clubs. If the facility hasn't opened yet, or you didn't buy at an existing facility, you get seven calendar days to cancel.
  • Moving. If you move more than 25 miles away and the club doesn't offer a comparable facility within 25 miles, you can cancel. You owe only the charges up to the date the club gets evidence of your move, plus any contract fee capped at the lesser of 10% of the unused balance or $50.
  • Death or disability. You or your estate owe only the charges up to the date of death or the start of the disability. The club may ask for reasonable evidence.
  • Notice and refunds. Cancellation must be in writing, by certified or registered mail to the address in the contract, online through the club's website if you signed up online, or by email if the contract gives an email address. Refunds are due within 30 days of the club receiving your notice.

For federal rules and other states, see our guide to gym fees and how cancellation works.

This is general information, not legal advice. For a specific dispute, read your contract and contact the Illinois Attorney General's consumer protection division or a lawyer.

How we chose these gyms

We built this list from desk research, not visits. We didn't tour, train at or get paid by any of these gyms, and none paid to be included. We started from the gyms in the earlier version of this page and the clubs named in Time Out Chicago's December 2025 list, then kept only those whose current details we could confirm on the gym's own website and at least one independent source. We aimed for a spread of budgets and training styles: a mid-range full gym, a budget neighborhood gym, a multi-club network, a coached strength gym and three full-service clubs. For each gym we recorded what it publishes: address, hours, equipment and classes, membership and day-pass prices, and the fees that change the real monthly cost. Where a gym doesn't publish a price, we say so instead of guessing. We don't use star ratings or review counts. Everything was checked on 18 October 2026.

Two gyms from the earlier version of this page are gone. Number One Gym's web address now points to an unrelated gambling site, so we couldn't confirm it's operating. Anytime Fitness Logan Square's official club page wouldn't load for our checks, although the chain's 24/7 clubs remain an option worth checking directly. Fitness Formula Clubs, Quads Gym, XSport Fitness, the YMCA of Metro Chicago and Planet Fitness all blocked our automated checks. We'll add any of them once we can confirm details from official sources.

How we score these gyms

Each gym gets a score from 1 to 5 on five criteria, in half-point steps. The overall score is the average of the five, rounded to one decimal place. We score only what each gym publishes, as described in this guide. We did not visit, tour or train at any of these gyms, and no gym paid for its score.

When a gym doesn't publish its price, its value score is capped at 3.0, because you can't judge value without a price. A specialist gym can still score highly on facilities if its equipment is strong for what it does. These scores are a starting point for your shortlist. They are not a substitute for a trial visit at the time you'd actually train.

  • Value: the price compared with what's included, after initiation, annual and processing fees.
  • Facilities: the equipment and amenities listed, such as platforms, pools, saunas, recovery areas and studios.
  • Access: opening hours (24/7 scores highest), day passes or free trials, and the number of locations.
  • Coaching: the range of classes, coaching and programming on offer.
  • Transparency: whether prices, contract and cancellation terms, and hours are clearly published.
